The first Puerto Rican woman to become Miss Universe, Ms. Maralet won the crown in 1970. She has said that "to be Miss Universe you have to be 50% beautiful and 50% intelligent," and she went on to display her intelligence with a number of successful business ventures, including the fashion magazine Caras, of which she is founder, CEO, and editor. Over the years, Ms. Maralet has downplayed her status as Miss Universe, asserting that "it would be pathetic of me to parade around as an adult woman still claiming beauty queen notoriety with crown and bandanna." She has also distanced herself from the glitz and glamour associated with the pageant. When asked in 1972 how she had spent her Miss Universe winnings, she responded bluntly that she used the money for "nothing materialistic, thats for sure." As a college freshmen and classical ballerina, Deborah Carthy-Deu became the second Puerto Rican Miss Universe in 1985. She later owned a ballet school and a modeling agency in San Juan, and she continued modeling as well as acting on stage and television. In 2000, Ms. Carthy-Deu attracted attention when she made several campaign appearances in support of her boyfriend, Popular Democratic Party senator Eduardo Bhatia, in his unsuccessful bid to be mayor of San Juan. Dayanara Torres won the Miss Universe pageant in 1993, and she has since embarked on a highly successful modeling career. Half Filipino, Ms. Torres spent three years in the Philippines in the mid-1990s and became a major star in that country. In 2000, she married Marc Anthony, the multi-talented salsa singer and film/stage actor. The two have since had a child. Both Torres and Anthony acted as judges for the 2001 Miss Universe pageant, and afterwards they hosted a party to honor the new Miss Universe, commemorate their first wedding anniversary, and celebrate Dayanaras first Mothers Day.
