Our position: Take advantage of forum to learn about Puerto Rico's current events.

Central Florida's thriving Puerto Rican community has special reason to keep attuned to events as they unfold on the island. But, in truth, all Americans should pay more attention to what happens to their fellow citizens in Puerto Rico.

An upcoming community forum will bring Puerto Rico's current events -- such as Vieques and political status -- alive in an open, educational, interactive setting. Sponsored by Global Connections for Central Florida, a regional, nonprofit educational group, and hosted by Valencia Community College, the program will feature prominent speakers from several political perspectives.

Because the event is free and open to the public, Central Floridians shouldn't hesitate to attend, learn more about Puerto Rican politics and culture, and make their views heard. The forum will be held at Valencia's East Campus Performing Arts Center from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 11. Those seeking more information should call Carol Traynor at 407-299-5000, ext. 1017.
