New Progressive Party (NPP) Second Vice President Sen. Lucy Arce and the Organization of Progressive Women, which she presides, endorsed Friday NPP President Carlos Pesquera's initiative to collect one million signatures to request statehood for Puerto Rico from President George W. Bush.

"We encourage fellow NPP followers to endorse this initiative," Arce said.

Arce said written requests for such purpose were sent via mail Friday to fellow NPP followers.

In addition, the women's organization will personally be visiting NPP followers in their homes to request signatures.

She also encouraged non-NPP followers who believe statehood is the best political status for the island to endorse the initiative.

Arce denounced that Gov. Sila Calderon's administration is giving a "dangerous" impression in Washington D.C. as to what is the will of the majority in Puerto Rico.

"That is why it is so important that we be active and not passive in our efforts to demand statehood for Puerto Rico," Arce said.

The NPP second vice president made her announcement Friday during a press conference at the NPP headquarters in Santurce.

Arce also announced her support of Pesquera's initiative to hold a caravan in support and solidarity with the United States in these times of war.

The caravan is scheduled to take place Dec. 8 from Bayamon's Juan Ramon Lubriel Stadium to Hato Rey's Hiram Bithorn Stadium.
