BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP) -- Regional airline Caribbean Star Airlines plans to start new service from Puerto Rico to other Caribbean islands to provide better connections to the United States.

Paul Moreira, Caribbean Star's chief executive, told The Associated Press Saturday that the Antigua-based airline will operate more flights from San Juan's international airport starting in July.

``Our focus now is to bring more tourists to the Caribbean as opposed to simply taking Caribbean nationals outside the region,'' he said.

From Puerto Rico, the airline will offer flights to Antigua, St. Maarten, Dominican Republic, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Tortola, Trinidad, Grenada and Guyana. Its main hubs would be in Barbados and Antigua.

Moreira said the airline plans to employ about 50 people in San Juan and has leased two Dash-8 planes for the expansion and plans to lease two more later this year.

Caribbean Star has established agreements with U.S. carriers to bring passengers from the United States into San Juan because U.S. authorities have restricted how many American cities the airline can serve, Moreira said. He did not identify the airlines with which the company has agreements.

The main airline that serves Puerto Rico is Fort Worth, Texas-based American Airlines, and its American Eagle subsidiary is often the only airline that residents in the U.S. territory can take to reach other Caribbean islands.

NEW YORK -- JetBlue Airways, New York's hometown, low-fare carrier, will introduce new twice-daily service between John F. Kennedy International Airport and San Juan, Puerto Rico, beginning May 30. JetBlue's regular low fares will range from $129(a) to $299(a) each way, which is up to 52% less than equivalent fares of other airlines serving the route nonstop from either JFK or Newark airports. "With more than three million Puerto Ricans living in the greater New York metropolitan area and millions more New Yorkers who love to vacation in Puerto Rico, it's no surprise that San Juan ranks as the third most popular destination served from JFK," said David Neeleman, CEO of JetBlue. "Now the youngest airline in the U.S. offers the most affordable fares and the friendliest service to the country's oldest, most historic city."

JetBlue will also offer convenient connecting service to San Juan from Buffalo and Rochester, NY, with fares ranging from $169(a) to $399(a) each way, and from LA/Long Beach, Oakland, CA, and Salt Lake City, UT, from $249(a) to $599(a) each way. New York Governor George Pataki said: "In less than two years, JetBlue Airways has grown from an ambitious start-up airline to a major player in the aviation industry, providing a convenient, affordable transportation link throughout New York State -- and now, to Puerto Rico. This new service will make it easier, and less expensive, for so many New Yorkers as they travel to and from Puerto Rico to do business and visit loved ones."

Puerto Rico Governor Sila Maria Calderon said: "Puerto Rico welcomes JetBlue Airways and its passengers to our beautiful Island. A warm world of enchanting beaches, exciting adventures and electrifying nightlife await all those who travel to Puerto Rico."
