March 19, 2002 SAN JUAN (AP) After understanding that the use of the license plate for the Commemoration of the Commonwealths 50th anniversary is optional, Justice Secretary Anabelle Rodriguez requested the dismissal of the lawsuit filed against Gov. Sila Calderon and Transportation and Public Works Secretary Jose Izquierdo for the distribution of the commemorative plates. According to published reports, Rodriguez answered the lawsuit arguing that the plaintiffs dont have the legal standing to file the suit and that the license plate is not intended "to forward a political ideology, but to commemorate the collective history and the juridical condition of the people of Puerto Rico." The Justice chief also stated that the plaintiffs havent suffered any damages that require the intervention of the courts. The governments reply was filed Monday prior to the deadline granted by San Juan Superior Judge Sonia Velez. Rodriguez added that Law 22 of Jan. 7, 2000 allows the Transportation chief to issue special or commemorative license plates. The lawsuit was filed Feb. 8 by New Progressive Party former legislative candidates Luis Maldonado and Virgilio Melendez.
