Miss Universe Returns To Puerto Rico May 24, 2002
------------------------ Isis Casalduc, Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2002 ------------------------ Once again, Puerto Rico, the island of enchantment, will be the site for the world's most important beauty pageant: Miss Universe 2002. On May 29, more than three million people from a diversity of ethnicities will be glued to their televisions, declaring in their own languages: "She's the most beautiful," "She has great poise," or even a lamentable, "Forget it, her answer was horrible." Meanwhile, more than 5,000 people will be sharing remarks as they witness the show live from Roberto Clemente Coliseum. This honor isn't the island's first to host the pageant. In 1972, when the contest was held for the first time outside the continental U.S., Puerto Rico was the chosen site. Last year's commemoration of Miss Universe Pageant's 50th anniversary also was celebrated here, with the winner being our very own Denise Quiñones. This year, San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, will be covered in beauty when it receives the 80 international delegates. Islanders will have the good fortune of applauding two lovely women: Isis Casalduc, Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2002, who will vie for the title; and Denise Quiñones, Miss Universe 2001, who will crown her successor. San Juan gets ready Roberto Clemente Coliseum--which turns 30 this year--is being remodeled to provide better accommodations for attendees. Renovations include dressing rooms, bathrooms, kiosks, and lighting systems. Although San Juan Mayor Jorge Santini had planned upgrades as part of municipal improvement projects, he hurried them along for the pageant celebration. The municipality invested $2.5 million for rights to host the pageant, and expects a return of $29-$34 million, which will benefit San Juan's economy. The international promotion invites people to visit the capital city during the pageant and markets the municipality as a great tourism destination. Calendar of activities The Miss Universe 2002 delegates are expected to arrive on the island May 10-12 to participate in various activities before the final competition. Among these are:
Miss Universe over time A series of changes and evolutions have occurred over Miss Universe Pageant's 51 years. Years ago, contestants weren't permitted to wear pants or two-piece bathing suits. Ten semifinalists are now selected, while in the past, 15 were chosen. The segment during which delegates modeled bathing suits wasn't recorded outdoors nor were candidates' scores displayed on television. Moreover, the winning delegate used to wear a cape over her shoulders. The beauty pageant's number of followers also has changed, increasing every year since its initiation. Through the years, some of its admirers were glued to the television along with family and friends while others cheered on their favorite delegate in person. Daisy Fuentes and Former NFL Great Phil Simms to Host, Distinguished Panel to Judge, 'Miss Universe 2002,' Competition, Multi-Platinum Latin Star Marc Anthony to Perform Live, to Be Broadcast Live From Puerto Rico, May 29th on the CBS Television Network May 21, 2002 SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The Miss Universe Organization today announced the star-studded panel of distinguished judges for THE 51ST ANNUAL MISS UNIVERSE(R) competition. Miss Universe 2002 will be broadcast live from San Juan, Puerto Rico on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 on the CBS Television Network (9 pm ET/delayed PT). The telecast panel will be comprised of R&B singer and Guess model Tyrese, Fashion Designer Nicole Miller, Men's Fashion Designer Amir, CBS Family Law's Christopher McDonald, former Baywatch beauty and Sheena star Gena Lee Nolin, Chinese entrepreneur Yue-Sai Kan, NFL's offensive MVP Marshall Faulk, Marisol Malaret Miss Universe 1970, and Survivor Africa winner Ethan Zohn. Multi-Platinum, Grammy Award winning Latin superstar Marc Anthony will perform live during the two-hour international telecast, which will be hosted by actress and model Daisy Fuentes and former NFL legend Phil Simms. At the conclusion of the two-hour primetime telecast, Denise Quinones, Miss UNIVERSE 2001, will crown her successor before an estimated worldwide viewing audience of 600 million in more than 176 countries and territories. Each contestant will be judged in three categories, including swimsuit, evening gown and interview. Marc Anthony Marc Anthony has sold more records than any other salsa artist, and has earned multi-platinum status with his self-titled English language album. He has also starred on Broadway in Paul Simon's "The Capeman" and in the Martin Scorsese feature film "Bringing Out the Dead." "I Need To Know," the album's first single. In 1999, Anthony earned a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for his hit song "I Need to Know," and, "Dimelo," the Spanish-language version of "I Need to Know," earned him a Latin Grammy for Song of the Year. The album's second single "You Sang To Me" hit #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart and received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance (2000).
