JULY 17, 2002 The historic building of Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR) will be the setting for its latest exhibition, "La fotografía como concepto" (Photography as a Concept). The display is part of a program of exhibits related to this medium, which explore its different angles--artistic, documental, and photo journalistic, among others. "Photography as a Concept" is a selection of photographic works by 20 artists from Puerto Rico and the United States. Some of the artists define themselves as photographers and have worked all their lives to develop themselves within this medium, while others choose to reject labels and prefer to describe themselves as artists. All of them, however, share an unusual photographic perception to create memorable images. The exhibitions feature works by Johnny Betancourt, Charles Biasini Rivera, Pablo Cambó, María Angélica Fernández, Rosa Irigoyen, Ignacio Lang, Niza Luna, Adál Maldonado, Héctor Méndez Caratini, Frida Medín, Frank X. Méndez, Néstor Millán, Guy Paizy, Marta Mabel Pérez, Ernesto Pujol, Rafael Ramírez, Aixa Requena, Ana Rosa Rivera, Aarón Salabarrías, and Víctor Vázquez. Photography as a medium has hardly been studied in Puerto Rico, especially its artistic aspect. The exhibition "Photography as a concept" demonstrates the impact of documental photography, with an emphasis on the transparency of the representation, its reality, and how this relates to social and political issues. "Through this selection, the first in a series that explores the different categories and aesthetics of the photographic medium, it has become evident how photography becomes confused and mixed with other mediums, genres, and more and more is converted into an essential part of contemporary art," expressed Dr. Mercedes Trelles Hernández, curator of the collection. Johnny Betancourt and Dr. Mercedes Trelles Hernández commissioned the exhibition along with the help of Prof. Mariel Quiñones. This MAPR exhibition was made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Enrique Renta Dávila and Andrés Guillemard. "Photography as a Concept" will be displayed until January 2003. Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is at 299 Ave. De Diego, Parada 22, Santurce, San Juan. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., with extended hours on Wednesday until 8 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12 and students with I.D. Discounts are available for people over 60 and groups of 30 or more people. For more information, call the MAPR at (787) 977-6277.
