Batter up.

Hispanic Beisbol has the distinction of being the first Spanish language monthly magazine devoted entirely to baseball. Published by New York-based Chicarito, the new magazine is a testament both to the huge popularity of the game within the Hispanic community and to the growing clout of that community in the advertising and publishing arenas.

"People and pundits have been writing baseball's obituary for years. But the game has never been more popular with the Hispanic community, and its a trend that shows no signs of letting up," said Victor Garrido, publisher of Hispanic Beisbol. Hispanics now make up more than one-quarter of all players in the major leagues.

The first issue features a cover story on New York Yankees' second-baseman Alfonso Soriano, as well as baseball news from Latin America and a column by the "dean" of Hispanic baseball writers Juan Vene. The first issue also examines the history of the Florida Marlins.

Hispanic Beisbol is aimed specifically at Hispanic males, who now number about 18 million in the United States. The total Hispanic population in the United States is expected to top 40 million within the next eight years by growing at an annual rate of around 15 percent.

Hispanic Beisbol debuts with a 100,000-copy print run and a $4.95 cover price. Subscriptions are priced at $28 for 12 issues. The magazine will be distributed in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, in addition to the United States.
