January 10, 2003 SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO -- Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) today proudly celebrates 50 years of service to San Juan, Puerto Rico, marking the anniversary of its first flight to the city on Jan. 10, 1953. Chicago & Southern (C&S) Airlines, which merged with Delta on May 1, 1953, began its first weekly flight to San Juan with the 57- passenger Lockheed Constellation airplane. The Caribbean route was important in the early development of Delta, contributing to its growth into one of the world's leading airlines. The airline's first round-trip flight departed New Orleans on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., arriving in San Juan at 7:30 p.m., following brief stops in Port au Prince, Haiti, and Ciudad Trujillo, Dominican Republic. The return flight departed San Juan on Sunday afternoon. Delta began serving San Juan with a weekly flight in 1953 but later increased to four weekly flights using Convair 340 aircraft. The airline began daily service on June 1, 1954, and the first nonstop flight departed on May 2, 1962. Today, Delta operates 32 weekly flights from San Juan to Atlanta with the 173-passenger Boeing 757 and 252-passenger Boeing 767.
