Intelligencer Journal Lancaster, PA Rendell Nominee Benjamin Ramos Brings Service, Human Touch To Cabinet Post By Enelly Betancourt January 22, 2003 Pennsylvania's next Secretary of the Commonwealth, subject to Senate confirmation, will be 20-year non-profit and public service veteran Benjamin Ramos, one of 10 children born in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico , and living in the City of Philadelphia since 1971. If confirmed, Ramos will be the first Latino to hold that office in the history of the state. Ramos represented Pennsylvania's 180th Legislative District from 1994 through 2000. As a member of the state House of Representatives, Ramos's focuses included improving adult basic education and curbing school violence. He earned a reputation for providing strong constituent services to many disadvantaged families living in his district. Prior to his election to the state House, Ramos served in the Rendell administration as deputy mayor for community affairs and was chief of staff to city Councilman at- large Angel L. Ortiz in the late 1980s. "I am pleased to nominate Ben Ramos for Secretary of the Commonwealth. Ben will bring a real human touch to an agency that can sometimes appear overly burdensome and overwrought with paperwork. Ben and I believe that, inevitably, the paper trail leads back to people's lives, and the more streamlined and efficient we can make the process of government, the better able we will be at providing the services of government to the people of Pennsylvania," Rendell said. The Secretary of Commonwealth's responsibilities include processing filings concerning business entities, overseeing the Commonwealth's electoral process as well campaign finance, registering licensed charities operating in our state, overseeing the state athletic commission, administering trademark registrations and providing public access to all of this information.
