York Daily Record WHAT DO YOU THINK? Puerto Rican statehood 04/06/97 (Copyright 1997) Last week we asked if readers would like to see Puerto Rico become the 51st state. Most callers opposed doing so but failed to leave their name and phone number. The Daily Record was unable to print their responses because we were unable to confirm their calls. Here's what some other callers had to say: Yes indeed. I think they should be a state. I think we should have them as a state because they get a lot of benefits without any responsibility and I think they should be a state and accept some of the responsibility that other states have. I would oppose Puerto Rico becoming the 51st state simply because I feel the U.S. would have nothing to gain by it and it would probably draw us further into debt. On the other hand, Puerto Rico has nothing to lose and everything to gain. The bottom line is, I think Puerto Rico would have little to contribute to our nation and would become more dependent on our tax dollars. CHRIS SMITH HANOVER

No, absolutely not. Puerto Rico should not be considered for the 51st state of this great country. The individuals from the 49th and 50th states are not inflating our welfare costs or asking special favors. Persons from those last two states admitted to the union participate and contribute economically and share tax bases. And above all, they blend into our society, speaking English, the language of our great country. They do not and will not ask for special privileges because they are of a certain origin. These are not racist statements because my forefathers from Europe were indentured servants proud to pay the price for their freedom by serving their new country during wartime asking for nothing.
