Rico (03/06/98, Copyright 1998) Following a stunning vote in the U.S. House, Puerto Ricans could decide for themselves whether they want to trade their U.S. commonwealth status for statehood. Under the legislation, they could also opt for independence. The Senate must approve the proposal. Puerto Rico could get voting representation in Congress with two senators and six representatives. But, statehood also would mean Puerto Ricans would pay income taxes. The predominantly Spanish-speaking commonwealth has opponents worried that statehood could cause language problems with the potential situation like Quebec, which has a French-speaking separatist movement. But, America has many Spanish-speaking citizens now. Puerto Ricans should have the freedom to choose their future. This nation stands for democracy.
