SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Puerto Rico Gov. Pedro Rossello's office filed a bill Thursday that would allow the U.S. commonwealth to vote on statehood Dec. 13, if the bill is approved by the Puerto Rican Legislature. An aide to Rossello said the bill set the status plebiscite for Dec. 13 and would earmark $750,000 to be divided among the island's three main political parties to pay for the cost of the campaign. Under the measure, Puerto Rico's 3.8 million residents would decide whether the U.S. territory should retain its commonwealth status, become the 51st state or become an independent nation.
