George W. Bush supports
statehood for Puerto Rico. "For Puerto Rico to be a state
would be good", he stated.
The Texas Governor favors holding another
Puerto Rico plebiscite. "But I don't know if it should be
federal or not", Bush said. He promised to work with Congress
and Puerto Rico about the structure of status selection.
"At the end, the people of Puerto Rico
will have the last word about statehood. But if the people of
Puerto Rico do not want to be a state, it will not be a state,"
Bush concluded.

"Nearly four million American citizens
living in Puerto Rico are disenfranchised citizens without the
most basic rights of representation in our government. I believe
the people of Puerto Rico deserve a vote on a congressionally-defined
referendum that gives them a fair and unambiguous choice on this
matter of such importance to their future.
"As President I will ensure Congress
authorizes the status self-determination process, and I will
support the will of the Puerto Rican people including their choice
of statehood or independence". -Senator John McCain
