Anibal Marrero Perez resigned from his post on Wednesday amidst allegations that he accepted gifts in exchange for providing political favors. The senator, who immediately following the publication of the first allegations linking him to the scandal quit his post as Senate vice president, also quit his bid for re-election in the upcoming elections. The Bayamon district senator was seeking his fifth term to the post. "I leave with my spirit at rest," said Marrero in a TV message broadcast Wednesday afternoon. Prior to being a lawmaker, Marrero was the president of the Bayamon municipal assembly. During the five minute message, Marrero said he quit his post and was notifying his decision to Senate President Charlie Rodriguez and his plans not to seek a re-election to NPP President Carlos Pesquera. Pesquera said the NPP governing board would meet next week to discuss the matter and decide a proper course of action. Marrero’s resignation comes one day after a unanimous vote by the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate the allegations against Marrero. With his resignation, the investigation becomes moot. Both Gov. Pedro Rossello and Pesquera had asked Marrero to desist of seeking re-election for the sake of the party but the senator had refused.
