SAN JUAN — 12/19/00 - Gov-elect Sila Calderon on Tuesday appointed social worker Yolanda Zayas Santana as Family Secretary, and CPA Maria del Llano Sobrino to the newly created post of General Auditor in that department.

Del Llano's main task will be to make sure child support payments are received and distributed on time to recipients.

Describing the Family and Children Administration as the agency responsible for fighting and eradicating child abuse, which currently produces some 22,000 cases annually on the island, Calderon appointed Prof. Victor Ivan Garcia Toro as its head.

Garcia Toro inherits an agency which administers the funds from the federal Nutritional Assistance Program (PAN for its Spanish acronym). Federal officials have said the agency must ensure that 75% of the money allocated for PAN is spent on food by April 2001.

Meanwhile, Inter American University Legal Assistance Clinic Director Aleida Varona Mendez was appointed to head the Child Support Administration, known as Asume by its Spanish acronym.

Also appointed Tuesday was CPA Orlando Gonzalez to head the Family Socio Economic Development Administration.
