The Kansas City Star Fragile ‘Biobays' 29 January 2005 Fragile ‘biobays' I thoroughly enjoyed Lauren Chapin's Puerto Rico travel article (1/23, Travel, "That Puerto Rican glow"). I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and have been living here for almost eight years. I go back to the island on a yearly basis and have recently visited the amazing Bioluminiscent Bay in Vieques Island. However, I would like your readers to know about a specific issue regarding these "biobays." When the writer recommended applying plenty of mosquito spray, she needed to point out that mosquito repellents with Deet are prohibited. So please check the labels of your repellent. (For more information visit www.golden-heron.com/biobay.html ). Ecologically friendly repellents may be provided to you by your bay tour; if not, they may be purchased on the island. This is a very fragile ecosystem that needs all the help it can get. I would encourage anyone to visit this amazing place. However, I want to make sure that it can be enjoyed by my children and future generations.
