The 47th annual meeting of the Confederation of Latin American Tourism Organizations (Cotal by its Spanish acronym) is to take place in San Juan Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, announced Dr. Matías Prisco, its president.

Signing the agreement for the meeting with Prisco were Puerto Rico Tourism Co. (PRTC) Executive Director Terestella González Denton, Puerto Rico Travel Agents Association (PRTAA) President Ángel Alverio, and Puerto Rico Convention Bureau Regional Sales Manager Pier Marie Le Compte, as well as Cotal’s legal counsel Christian Barra.

About 400 tourism industry professionals from throughout the hemisphere will attend. "Participants will exhibit their products to the travel industry and also to the public," said Prisco, explaining that admission to the first day of the event will be limited to businesspeople while the second day will be open to the public.

Describing the meeting as "a great opportunity for Puerto Rico," Arturo Riollán, president of the Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands chapter of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), said the annual Cotal event "attracts the top-notch travel professionals from throughout the region, and it will be wonderful exposure for Puerto Rico." Riollán spoke for the industry in the absence of PRTAA president Ángel Alverio, who was off island.

Three new meetings in three weeks

This is the third travel industry meeting announced in as many weeks. At the end of April, the Barbados-based Caribbean Tourism Organization announced it had chosen San Juan as the venue for its eighth annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism in spring 2006 (CB May 5). Two weeks later, the San Juan-based Caribbean Hotel Association announced the annual Caribbean Marketplace would be returning to San Juan in January 2006 (CB May 19).

Cotal, headquartered in Buenos Aires, represents the interests of Latin America’s travel agents. Its commitment is to promote, on a worldwide basis, destinations throughout the hemisphere. In addition to travel agent members, it also has allied members representing national tourism organizations, transport companies, hotels, car rentals, and tourism-related media.
