Continuing the Heralds video series honoring the proud history of Puerto Ricans serving in the U.S. armed forces, this program showcases Puerto Ricos famed 65th Infantry Division, whose service in the Korean conflict of the early 1950s was so meritorious that the U.S. Commanding General Douglas MacArthur at the time once commented, "I wish we had more like them."
From the units beginnings in 1899 until 1950, the regiment had been relegated to minor roles. In Korea, the men of the 65th had their first chance to prove themselves to the skeptics of the U.S. military establishment, and they made the most of the opportunity. Over the course of the war, the 65th Infantry Regiment participated in nine major campaigns and played a decisive role in several crucial battles. Because of their courageous efforts, the 65th Infantry received a Presidential Unit Citation, a Meritorious Unit Commendation, and two Republic of Korea Unit Citations.
Subsequent videos will feature the new mission now undertaken by Puerto Rican units in the fight against international terrorism and other aspects of the service of over 200,000 U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico who have worn the uniform of our country and followed its flag into combat when it was required.
