SAN JUAN (AP) The U.S. Navy said there is no scientific evidence that the prostate cancer that Puerto Rican Independence Party President Ruben Berrios Martinez was diagnosed with is linked with the military practices conducted in Vieques, officials said. "Although it is a shame that Mr. Berrios, according to reports, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, no scientific study exists that at any time has the Navys activities in Vieques been linked with any health incident of the civil population in the island municipality," Navy spokesman Lt. Jeff Gordon said in published reports. He added that according to the American Cancer Society, about 180,400 new cases of prostate cancer are registered every year in the U.S. and "the majority occur in men of the age of Mr. Berrios." He said it is "speculative" to link Berrios cancer with any Navy activity in Vieques. Berrios Martinez announced Wednesday that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and will soon undergo surgery. Berrios Recovers From Prostate Cancer Operation June 17, 2000 BAYAMON (AP) Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) gubernatorial candidate Ruben Berrios, a key opponent of U.S. Navy bombing on the island of Vieques, had a successful operation Friday to remove his prostate because of cancer, his doctor said. "The operation was a success and Ruben is recuperating very well," said Dr. Mario Maldonado. Berrios will remain in Melendez Brothers Hospital in Bayamon for a day or two for observation, the doctor said. Berrios also is running for governor of Puerto Rico in November elections. "I saw him and he's in good shape with looks good," said Berrios' wife, Vivian Alemany. "The most important thing now is rest and recuperation and we're going to work on that." Vieques Presidential Directive In U.S. Senate Tight Spot Copyright © 2000 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS. All Rights Reserved. SAN JUAN (AP) The proponents of the presidential directive over Vieques in the U.S. Senate consider it is more convenient to wait until the congressional conference on the measure for authorizing defense funds to try and include the transfer of the lands in west Vieques to Puerto Rico, said Jeffrey Farrow, co-chairman of the White House Puerto Rico Group. He said then the different controversies would have been resolved over other matters that have this bill in checkmate. The congressional conference is the last opportunity to include the provision of the land transfer in that bill, according to published reports. The bill in discussion in the Senate contains the authorization of $40 million for economic programs and a referendum over the future of the U.S. Navy in Vieques. The bill has been approved by the U.S. House of Representatives but with the transfer of the western lands of Vieques to the Puerto Rico government and the allocation of the $40 million without conditions.
