Ralph Reed Calls for Republicans in Congress to Pass H.R. 856
It's only fitting that a Republican Congress should give the people of Puerto Rico what so many Republican presidents sought to achieve – a way to determine for themselves the government they should have. Give them your support for H.R. 856.
February 12, 1998 1998: The Year Puerto Rico’s Quest for Self-Determination is Realized
This year Puerto Ricans mark the centennial of the Spanish-American war with decidedly mixed feelings. On the one hand we rejoice in the American citizenship that was bestowed on us by the United States...
January 9, 1998 Miriam Ramirez de Ferrer says that Mari Bras decision is a blow to PDP and weakens statutory US citizenship for all Puerto Ricans.
Puerto Rico’s Supreme Court has done more than just hand down an erroneous decision on both the facts and merits of the Mari Bras case, it has also acted in an extra-constitutional manner by usurping the powers of the legislative branch in order to achieve a purely politically motivated objective.
December 16, 1997 Dr Miriam Ramirez de Ferrer reveals the motives, facts and people behind efforts to derail the young bill.
The ludicrous tactics and transparent motives of those who are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to derail the Young Bill are sad and potentially tragic for the US residents of Puerto Rico and for the Republican National Party.
December 2, 1997 National Hispanic leader calls for Young Bill passage as an important step for the GOP in persuading Hispanics to once again support the republican party.
October 30, 1997 Mainland newspapers support Young Bill calling for Puerto Rico self-determination. Editorials also back statehood for Puerto Rico if voters choose that status in proposed 1998 plebiscite.
October 8, 1997 Rodriguez commissioned poll shows American voters by strong majorities favor admission of Puerto Rican state with English and Spanish as two official languages. Young bill self-determination favored as islander's preference for statehood will be implemented by the American electorate.
Senator Charles A. Rodriguez, President of the Puerto Rico Senate, hailed the results of a nationwide poll that found that sixty-five percent of American voters, up from 59 percent in a1991 Gallup poll, would support making Puerto Rico the fifty-first state if a majority of Puerto Ricans voted for statehood in a 1998 congressionally sponsored status plebiscite under the US-Puerto Rico Political Status Act, HR 856. The proposed legislation is scheduled to be voted on by the US House of Representatives this fall.
September 10, 1997 Miriam Ramirez seeks to find out who is behind PUERTO RICO FIRST’S scurrilous attacks on the Puerto Rican people as a means to undermine both the Young Bill and Puerto Rican statehood.
Puerto Rico First is led by Robert de Posada, the presumptive head of the Hispanic Business Roundtable. He says the members prefer to remain anonymous. I met de Posada when he was supposed to be liaison to the Hispanic community in President Bush’s re-election bid. Asked by the Bush campaign to check out what he was doing, I found the Hispanic reach-out effort was in shambles...
August 19, 1997 Senator Charles A. Rodriguez claims that Puerto Rico has earned statehood in an article written exclusively for THE ORLANDO SENTINEL.
July 18, 1997 Miriam Ramirez de Ferrer comments on an insightful "Non-paper" circulated at the recent June 1997 hearings on Puerto Rico at the United Nations.
According to press reports, it was not the petitioners who appeared before the U.N. "Committee of 24" who took the spotlight regarding Puerto Rico's status, but a non-paper on Puerto Rico supposedly circulated by the US delegation. This non-paper has been recognized by the political analysts, intellectuals, and other interested parties, as a milestone in the discussion in the United Nations regarding Puerto Rico's status...
July 4, 1997 Puerto Rico's 3.8 Million US Citizens join the celebration of America's 221st birthday on Independence Day - The mark-up of the US-Puerto Rico Political Status Act, H.R. 856 (The "Young Bill")
June 24, 1997 Arturo Guzman reacts to the recent "mark-up" of H.R. 856 ("THE YOUNG BILL") in Washington, D.C.
We the people of Puerto Rico; we who believe in the process of democracy above and beyond political or ideological differences, owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Cong. George Miller for his actions during the recent
"mark-up" of HR-856 ("The Young Bill") by the House Natural Resources Committee in Washington, D.C...
May 27, 1997 House Committee on Resources approves US - Puerto Rico Political Status Act, H.R. 856: PDP Commonwealth definition amendment decisively defeated after lengthy debate by Miriam Ramirez de Ferrer
The bipartisan legislation, which was introduced by Rep. Don Young, (R-AK), the Chairman of the Resources Committee, will provide the framework for a three stage process for the resolution of the political status of Puerto Rico...
May 20, 1997 "Statehood alone offers Puerto Rico the economic miracle Commonwealth has failed to deliver" – Ivar PietriI am here to share with the Committee my insights into the economy of Puerto Rico as it relates to the political status issue...
May 6, 1997 Constitution's Territorial Clause Alone Determines Congress' Authority And Power Over Puerto Rico by Miriam Ramirez De Ferrer
I want to address two issues that were raised by the pro-commonwealth supporters at the recent House Resources hearings in Puerto Rico on the bill: Congress' power to implement the "new commonwealth" proposal outside the Constitution's Territorial Clause and the extent to which this new entity would be exempt from specific laws affecting all Americans but the 3.7 million United States citizens residing on the island...
April 24, 1997 Issues on Citizenship, Sovereignty, and Language dominate the status forum
Questions regarding sovereignty, citizenship and increased powers for the island kept congressmen busy in the hearings held in San Juan and Mayaguez...
